Bryan didn't mix his words in media interviews post-retirement. On several occasions, he admitted that he might have to leave WWE if he ever wanted to wrestle again, because he knew they'd be unlikely to medically clear him themselves, and even hinted at a match with the Bullet Club outside WWE's walls in 2017.

Then, everything changed.

On 20 March 2018, Daniel appeared in-ring on SmackDown and revealed he'd be returning to the ring. That paved the way for his comeback at WrestleMania 34, and it stopped dead his visible boredom of the General Manager role that had been his lot since 2016. Overnight, Bryan went from unhappy retired wrestler to comeback king.

The announcement was greeted with tears of a different kind to the ones that had sodden tissues two years prior. Fans on social media rejoiced at the news and shared in Daniel's own personal happiness that he'd conquered his concussion issues and WWE's hesitations.
