The natural story following that comeback was that Bryan would win the WWE Title someday as a fan hero. As they often do in wrestling however, plans changed. On the latest SmackDown, Daniel did become champ... by booting AJ Styles right in the nuts behind the ref's back and then malevolently smiling as he pinned, then attacked, the babyface.

Unthinkably, right before Survivor Series and a fresh showdown with Brock Lesnar, Bryan will play heel for the first time since 2012.

This opens up new possibilities for him, and it's a marked improvement over almost everything he's done since returning before 'Mania. Forget the dreary Big Cass feud and put his brave attempts to put The Miz in his place once and for all to the side, because Bryan has serious potential as a heel.

It's a turn nobody could have seen coming before it happened. The low blow is one thing, but that evil grin and post-match beating of Styles offers up a different kind of villain to the ones Bryan has played before.
