10 Most Shocking Wrestling Squash Matches

Squash matches can be one of the most shocking parts of wrestling, whether they are good or bad.

Squash matches are an economic way of telling stories and are often more of an angle than a wrestling contest. The device is often used to profile a new character against unknown jobbers or wrestlers lower down the card. At their best, a squash match can be a shocking way to put over a superstar in a way that is dominant and convincing.

The most recent example of this occurred when Jon Moxley shocked the world by defeating CM Punk in a quick and brutal match to unify the AEW World Championships. Moxley came out of the match looking like the megastar that he is, whilst Punk sold the effects of his foot injury to perfection. Like many squash matches, it received a mixed reaction from fans, but their rematch at All Out in Chicago was all the more exciting because of it.

There is an art to getting a squash match right, as not all of them are good or even purpose-serving in the long run. When done well, such bouts are guaranteed to be shocking and serve to create a great deal of interest in a feud.

10. Kofi Kingston Vs Brock Lesnar - WWE SmackDown 2019

KofiMania was a phenomenon in 2019 that rewarded one of WWE's hardest working performers with an overdue World Title run. Kingston's WrestleMania match with Daniel Bryan was one of the best in the company's recent history and was so emotionally charged that it was always going to be hard to continue the momentum after the win.

Kofi's reign as WWE Champion struggled because it peaked at WrestleMania 35. Lacklustre feuds against Dolph Ziggler, Samoa Joe, and Randy Orton throughout the summer made it clear that his reign had not been a success. However, the way that the company decided to relieve the Ghanaian superstar of the WWE Title was unforgivable, as he was unceremoniously squashed by Brock Lesnar in just seven seconds.

Whilst it was clear that this title reign had not worked out, having the New Day man be embarrassed without so much as an offensive move on Lesnar was insulting. It left many fans clamoring for Kingston to get some retribution on the 'Beast Incarnate,' but that would never come.

It is not the first time that Brock had obliterated his opponent, but it was perhaps the most egregious case of it.
