10 Most Shocking Wrestling Unmaskings
8. The Black Scorpion
In 1990, WCW wanted to create a new, mysterious heel to feud with World Heavyweight Champion Sting, so they decided to get theatrical. In a series of vignettes, a robed figure (voiced by Ole Anderson) threatened the champ while alluding to being someone from his past. The subtext was clear - WCW wanted fans to think that the man behind the mask was The Ultimate Warrior, who had teamed with Sting early in both men's careers. Of course, being as how Warrior was WWE Champion, WCW couldn't deliver.
Instead, the company spun its wheels, not knowing what to do. At Clash of the Champions XII, The Black Scorpion (played by Al Perez) went toe to toe with Sting, but before the champ could unmask him, a second Black Scorpion appeared on the entrance ramp. That distraction allowed the one in the ring to escape.
Finally, Sting versus The Black Scorpion was signed for Starrcade 1990, with The Scorpion being forced to unmasked if he lost. Sting picked up the win after a top rope shoulderblock, but before The Black Scorpion could unmask, a host of other Scorpions ran in the ring. WCW's babyfaces came out to clean house, unmasking the men as The Four Horsemen. Eventually, Sting managed to tear the mask off the original Scorpion, revealing Ric Flair.
