As the longest reigning Intercontinental Champ of all time, Honky Tonk Man was over-confident to say the least when he stood in the ring at SummerSlam '88 and challenged anyone to take him on for the gold. Unfortunately for HTM, a certain warrior was listening backstage.

From the very first power chord of The Ultimate Warrior's entrance music, Madison Square Garden completely erupted. Moments later, sheer pandemonium spread through the crowd like wildfire when the painted superstar made his chaotic way to the ring.

The electricity continued when the bell rang and the audience went out of their minds with excitement for the unadvertised title match. With a raucous crowd cheering him on, Warrior hit the ring like a wrecking ball and tore the champ apart. In just 31 seconds, Honky Tonk's reign was over and the WWF had a new IC Champion.

One of the most awe-inspiring squash matches ever, The Ultimate Warrior's shock win over the Honky Tonk Man put an end to what was (and still is) the longest Intercontinental Title reign of all time. HTM had held the title for 454 days, making the dominant victory all the more impressive; meanwhile, the surprise factor made the title switch an instant classic.
