10 Most Shocking WWE Raw Returns Ever

8. Matt Hardy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMPCfu7nu8w When Matt Hardy was released from WWE on April 11 2005, it seemed very unlikely that he'd ever make a return. Hardy had been having deeply personal real life issues with Edge and Lita in the weeks before his release. Lita had been his long term girlfriend, and when he went out injured, she'd started an affair with Edge. That left Matt out in the cold. He was at home injured, and when he found out about the affair, he started lashing out online. From a WWE PR outlook, it wasn't good. Hardy was making headlines and distracting from the on-air product. Edge was a key focus of WWE and primed to be a headliner, and the company didn't want real negatives afflicting their golden boy. What ended up, was Matt being released. It looked bad, like an injured guy had been released just to spare the blushes of Edge. In truth, Hardy really was surplus to requirements, and had struggled for relevancy in the years since The Hardy Boyz broke up in 2002. But due to the circumstances of the release, and Hardy's mobilising of internet fans, he created big pressure on WWE to give him his job back. Fans were getting more and more vocal at shows, and surprisingly, WWE gave in. Hardy turned up on the July 11 2005 Raw, just three months after being released, and attacked Edge in a shoot style segment. He told fans to watch Ring Of Honor and it came off like he'd legit turned up as a fan and attacked Edge. Nobody expected to see him back, and the worked shoot came off massively shocking. Nevertheless, a few months later, Hardy was back to being just another guy in WWE.
