When we think of the great champions in WWE history, images of Bruno Sammartino, Bret Hart, Steve Austin, and John Cena usually come to mind. However, The Fabulous Moolah deserves to be mentioned in the same breath. Since 1956 she had held the women's championship on and off for 28-years, losing it at various stages in that period, but always retaining her position at the top.

By 1987, she was a veteran of the industry and even though her style left a lot to be desired, she still commanded respect due to her years of service. Now that her time at the summit was coming to an end it was time to pass the torch to another. That person was Sherri Martel, who won the belt at a live event in Houston, Texas. Not only was this long before the days of Sensational Sherri, it was, in fact, her debut in the WWF.

This cemented Sherri in the history books as she went on to hold the title for 441 days. This would be her only reign with the championship. She then became one of the most acclaimed managers in the business, working with names like Randy Savage, Ric Flair, and Shawn Michaels, before being inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2006.
