7. Jerry Lawler
I hear you ..."First Del Rio, Sheamus, and the Shining Stars—and now Jerry Lawler; what on earth is he thinking?"
But as crazy as it
sounds in 2016, the Jerry Lawler that we were given on the final weeks before
SmackDown’s move to Tuesdays was nothing short of awesome.
With Byron Saxton assuming the role of the goofy face announcer, Lawler was afforded the freedom to be as cynical as he liked, and it produced some of his best work in a number of years. As a rejuvenated heel, Lawler struck up a bantering relationship with Mauro Ranallo—but most importantly it was an enjoyable one.
Or at least, far better than the usual heel vs. face announcer dynamic we’ve seen from the likes of JBL and Saxton.
And even if they don’t necessarily link him with Mauro directly, surely he’s deserving of some kind of spot on one of the main TV shows? Currently he’s being tasked with pre-show duties for both Raw and SmackDown, but if they’d allow him to continue with the heel spiel in a more prominent position he could be contributing a whole lot more.
Then again, perhaps the domestic trouble a few months back had something to do with the fall from grace…
