10 Most Undeserving Winners Of Vacant Wrestling Titles
3. Randy Orton
It’s not just the tag team titles that have been awarded
seemingly on a whim though. Even the biggest prize in the company has been decided
by such improper means.
In what is his second appearance on this most prestigious of lists, Randy Orton’s latest entry came at No Mercy 2007 when he was gifted the title by Vince McMahon.
Looking back, this one was a little convoluted. The belt had been vacated in light of a legitimate injury suffered by John Cena, who at the time had been enjoying a 380-day reign as WWE Champion. That news prompted McMahon to promise that a new champion would be crowned at the No Mercy PPV, which all sounded fine and dandy.
What he hadn’t promised though, would that the champion would be crowned by unfair means. McMahon opened the show by teasing a series of matches, before simply naming Orton the new WWE Champion. Later in the night though, Triple H would capture the title, only to lose it back to Orton again before the close of the show.
I guess you could claim that his eventual victory was rather more well-earned, but that first reign of the evening was anything but deserved.
