10 Most Unique Knockouts In UFC History

6. Shonie Carter Vs. Matt Serra - UFC 31

Finish: Spinning Back Fist

UFC 31 was a strange card in hindsight.

The show was headlined by an already-ageing Randy Couture in his first Heavyweight title defence against journeyman Pedro Rizzo, in what would be his second of three unsuccessful attempts to take that belt.

Pat Miletich's run with the Welterweight title came to an end thanks to Carlos Newton, who would lose the championship in his next fight anyway. Chuck Liddell picked up a knockout win, still a couple of years off his star reaching the heights it would.

Even a young BJ Penn was on the card, making his MMA debut in the prelims.

In amongst all that, sitting four fights down from the top of the card and still years away from a much nicer career highlight of his, was Matt Serra, who was lined up against a veteran of 29 fights, Shonie Carter.

In just his third fight in the UFC, Carter certainly made a name for himself, producing a knockout of the year contender, and one of the all-time greatest single punches the company has ever seen.

Just the sound of the impact alone is enough, but the vision of Serra's unsuspecting face meeting Carter's back fist going a thousand miles an hour was one of the company's earlier genuine highlight reel knockouts.

The lead kick and timing to follow through perfectly on the spin was poetry in motion. The result was justified for the sensational aesthetic and impact of it all.
