By the time 2006 had rolled around, everyone knew about Mick Foley's history with the "death match" genre of wrestling. They had either seen the matches themselves, had heard about them from others, or had seen the clips that aired during his time in the WWF. Mick had even been in some insane matches while with the company, but if you're talking "death match", nothing came as close as his match with Edge at WrestleMania 22 did. Blood. Fire. Thumbtacks. Barbed wire. Baseball bat. This is a style of match that wrestling fans never, ever thought they would see at WrestleMania. Edge's facial expressions in this match tell a chilling story. When he landed in the thumbtacks, he looked like he was about to go into shock from the pain, and he had a similar look when the match was over, as blood dripped from his face and his hands couldn't stop shaking. Foley did more for Edge's singles career than anyone in the world not named Vince McMahon or John Cena. He selflessly put Edge over as a big deal. Edge had won the WWE Title for the first time three months earlier, but after dropping the title only three weeks later, some fans were wondering if he was a "fluke" of some type. His performance at WrestleMania 22 elevated him again, and three months later, he was the WWE Champion for the second time.
