John Cena and Brock Lesnar's war at Extreme Rules 2012 is easily the most brutal match of WWE's modern era. While the return of Lesnar after eight years gone from the company was monumental from the first second he appeared, the realisation of just how much more violent and threatening Lesnar had become didn't sink in until the opening moments of his main event with Cena.

The fans were prepared for a degree of violence, the stipulation and Lesnar's reputation guaranteed that a battle would be fought, but no one expected this. After just a few seconds of the opening bell ringing, Lesnar took down the 16 time world champion and repeatedly elbowed/punched him in the head, legitimately busting him open and causing blood to pour all over Cena's skull.

Instead of guilt over making a fellow professional bleed, Lesnar looked over at the crimson soaked Cena with delight and proceeded to beat him further, making the gruesome sight even more barbaric as he refused to offer WWE's biggest star any relief. It was one of the most shocking moments in company history and immediately established the new era of Lesnar as a combat veteran with no empathy and no mercy.
