The 1999 Royal Rumble match was a different animal than its predecessors. Granted the winner is often predictable, an enjoyable aspect of the contest is seeing competitors pull off incredible feats earning or evading an elimination. Such was hardly the case during the 12th instalment of the bout.

The Steve Austin-Mr McMahon feud was at full-steam and consumed the match. Coming in first and second, the enemies made fans pop when they began trading blows. Then, shenanigans ensued.

The Corporation jumped Austin, resulting in a ride to the local medical facility. Outside of a handful of moments (think Mabel being kidnapped), the other wrestlers mostly killed time until Stone Cold made his return. Rather than give Austin a turkey, WWE went with the CEO (with help from The Rock) for the sake of shock value. The PPV's theme was "No Chance in Hell," and 'V-Mac' made good on his word.

One couldn't help but feel like the events of the '99 Rumble spawned from McMahon's unrestrained ego. The boss forfeited his 'Mania opportunity the next night, which Commissioner Shawn Michaels then awarded to the runner-up.

If The Rock vs. Stone Cold was always the plan for WrestleMania 15, Austin could have looked a lot stronger if a more worthy adversary filled 'Vinnie's' spot, and of course, if 'The Rattlesnake' won for the third time in a row.
