A well rounded character doesn’t necessarily need to possess both heroic and villainous qualities - sometimes they just need to be recognisable. MJF is basically 100% jerk, but the fact that he’s a believable, human jerk makes him all the more perfect as a top heel.

The detail MJF brings to his character is impeccable, from the haircut to the Burberry scarf to the pinkie ring. Everyone has known an MJF-like figure, full of ill earned ego that belies a lack of self confidence and underlying cowardice, hidden under layers of bravado.

It helps that MJF is so invested in his gimmick; he’s one of the last great protectors of kayfabe, willing to flip the bird at young fans and offer himself up for crowds to take a swing at. It doesn’t matter that he’s unerringly villainous - his motivations and his actions all make sense.

And yet, of late, we’ve been led to believe there’s something more to MJF. His recent Dynamite promo spoke to his feeling betrayed by former hero CM Punk’s retirement, and touched on antisemitic abuse and a period of soul searching.
