Jim Ross is often referred to as the greatest announcer of all time but his career has been far from perfect. While calling a UK PPV in 1998 JR got word that his Mother had passed away, causing him to have another bout of Bells Palsy, which prevented him from fulfilling his on-camera duties. Michael Cole did a decent job as his replacement in the interim, keeping the seat warm for Good 'ol JR's impending return. Vince McMahon and WWE writer Vince Russo decided they wanted Ross to return as a heel, maintaining that McMahon had fired him again and had him enlist the services of Dr Death Steve Williams as his bodyguard. JR confronted Michael Cole and kicked him in the nuts and even set up a commentary table in front of Cole and Lawler with a JR attitude logo. The main problem with the angle is that the fans loved Ross and the company turning him heel only made fans cheer him more and put more heat on Michael Cole. I always felt sorry for Cole because he did the best he could but the JR heel turn angle hurt him a lot more than it helped Ross. The turn was a flop and within a month JR was back at the announce desk besides The King. McMahons latest attempt to mess with Ross had backfired yet again.
