It's fair to say that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker asked fans to accept a lot of questionable creative calls.

But even for those who could get onboard with Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) returning from the dead after being re-introduced in a Fortnite event, Rey (Daisy Ridley) being Palpatine's granddaughter, and even the "Reylo" kiss between Rey and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), there were groans the world over at the film's terrible final line.

The Rise of Skywalker ends with Rey visiting Tatooine to bury the Skywalker lightsabers, before revealing her own new lightsaber.

An elderly local woman asks Rey her name, and after a glance at Force ghosts of Luke (Mark Hamill) and Leia (Carrie Fisher), she retorts, "Rey Skywalker." Roll credits.

Millions were practically shouting, "Don't say it!" at the screen, because it was just such a corny and predictable way to end the movie.

Rey looking on at the ghosts of Luke and Leia was enough to convey to the audience that she has adopted the Skywalker name, but because that's apparently too subtle, we seemingly needed to have Rey speak it aloud.

Cutting to the credits before Rey could answer would've instantly made the scene so much more tolerable, but instead, we got Rey proudly proclaiming herself a Skywalker despite...not really earning it.

At least if the scene had ended ambiguously, audiences could've decided for themselves what Rey will call herself.
