10. Nick Fury Loses His Eye To Goose - Captain Marvel

Ahead of Captain Marvel's release, fans were fully expecting the film to reveal the means through which a younger Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) lost an eye and earned his distinctive eyepatch-clad appearance.

And while the film ultimately did reveal the events which caused Fury's ocular injury, it was in a manner people only joked about pre-release.

As it turns out, one of Fury's eyes is permanently blinded when his face is scratched mid-film by Goose, the alien Flerken that resembles a harmless-looking cat.

After not taking too kindly to being relentlessly tickled by Fury, Goose claws at his face, blinding him in one eye in the process.

Hilariously, Fury then refuses to disclose the rather pathetic means of his injury to his colleagues, creating an aura of mystery around it as has been one of the character's defining features in the MCU.

But many fans were simply left fuming that Fury's eye was injured by a mere cat, or rather, an alien masquerading as one.

Given that most expected the injury to come at the hands of a Skrull stealing the identity of one of Fury's friends, that it was ultimately a completely inconsequential moment, narratively-speaking, left a lot of MCU die-hards feeling it was also a subversive step too far.
