10 Movies About Wrestling We Actually Want To See

The stars of Hollywood meet the stories of Stamford.

The Rock’s upcoming dramatization of ‘Fighting With My Family’ is a puzzling affair. The original Channel 4 documentary was an eye-opener for sure, a detailed look into the life of Paige, one of Britain’s then-most promising stars, and the surrounding family who helped to shape her career. But this begs the question: if the story has already been told first-hand, what is the point in a fictionalised version?

Perhaps even more importantly, who is this movie for? Although WWE Studios is on board to produce Fighting With My Family, it has never been mentioned on air, despite The Rock appearing after the 20th February edition of RAW to shoot some in-ring scenes. Had this film been about Charlotte Flair or Dolph Ziggler, Michael Cole probably would have jumped at the chance to announce The Rock’s return, and his upcoming biopic. But Paige is stuck, rather aptly, between a rock and a hard place when it comes to WWE.

It also doesn’t seem like the kind of topic most fans want to see explored in a wrestling movie. Paige’s story is interesting, even inspirational, but it feels too recent and too widely covered to be worthy of a filmic adaptation, particularly while Paige’s career is on hiatus.

Whether it be through a documentarian’s lens or a full-blown biopic, there are other, more captivating moments and stories from the world of pro wrestling that would be better suited to the big screen.

10. Andre The Giant: Closer To Heaven

Andre the Giant is still one of the most iconic and remarkable figures to have graced a squared circle, and his mainstream appeal has ensured that his legacy as a household showbusiness name has lived on throughout the 21st Century.

Andre’s daughter, Robin Christensen-Roussimoff is apparently trying to adapt the biographical graphic novel Andre the Giant: Closer to Heaven for the big-screen, and while the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’s’ career will no doubt make for some heart-breaking viewing, the burning question remains: who is our Andre?

Thanks to his gigantism and acromegaly, Andre looked unlike any other wrestler or actor before or since, which will present quite the conundrum when it comes to casting this thing. Do you push for somebody purely because they look a lot like the Giant? Do you pick someone of roughly the same height, and simply go to town on him with prosthetic makeup? Or do you forgo looks almost entirely, and try to cast somebody who more closely captures Andre’s warmth and intimidating presence in equal measure?

Either way, this feels like something that should have happened a long time ago. As the original WWE Hall of Famer and a bonafide movie star in his own right, Andre the Giant’s story is one that can be appreciated by wrestling fans and moviegoers alike.
