10 Movies About Wrestling We Actually Want To See

9. A Brief History Of Professional Wrestling

There’s no way a single feature length documentary could chronicle the entire professional wrestling business, there are far too many important events and figures to squeeze into two hours, that there wouldn’t be enough time to do each one justice.

But if there’s one thing that can be off-putting to new or lapsed wrestling fans, it’s missing out on or being somewhat ignorant to pro wrestling history. Between the territories, WWE, WCW, the many promotions in Japan, British and European wrestling and modern independents, there’s simply too much wrestling in the world for any one person (even Dave Meltzer) to be able to keep up. But a comprehensive, catch-all documentary about the key moments that helped to shape the industry would go a long way towards filling in those knowledge gaps, and would improve our understanding of JBL’s commentary references by about 75% at least.

In fact, perhaps a Ken Burns-style mini-series or string of TV features is the best way of accomplishing such a feat. You could draft in wrestling journalists and historians to elaborate on certain events, hire actors or the wrestlers themselves to narrate or re-stage others, and you could eventually etch out a fairly robust ‘beginner’s guide’ to wrestling over the course of six to ten hour-long films.
