10 Negatives Heading Into WrestleMania 33

9. Giving Goldberg Vs. Brock Lesnar The Universal Title

The Universal Championship hasn’t had the best of starts to life in the WWE, so you can see why the company might’ve hoped to boost its reputation by adding it to this year’s main event meeting between Goldberg and Brock Lesnar.

But truth be told, that match doesn’t need a championship involved. Their story is already perfectly poised after what went down at Survivor Series and the Royal Rumble - not to mention that they’re both already big enough stars to get by on sheer name value alone.

Plus, adding the title to their rivalry denies newer stars the chance to step up into the main event spotlight at the biggest show of the year. This is something that’s all the more important at WrestleMania, given the influx of casual fans that the pay-per-view typically brings in.

Unfortunately, giving Goldberg vs. Lesnar the title means that rather than educating a wider audience about stars of the future—like Kevin Owens or Finn Bálor—the company is only reiterating to viewers that the current crop of full-time talent is still a long way behind the part-time names of yesteryear.

So much for booking for the long-term...
