10 New Directions For WWE After Backlash 2016
5. New SmackDown Tag Team Champions
As well as the crowning of Becky Lynch as the first-ever SmackDown Women’s Champion, we also saw the inaugural SmackDown Tag Team Champions determined in the unlikely form of Heath Slater and Rhyno.
Much like the situation with Becky, you could argue that some of the excitement of this wonderful storyline might be lost now that Slater and Rhyno have finally reached the mountain top, but personally I think they’re already so over that they’ll be able to keep the magic going.
Which means the only other question surrounding this one pertains to who’s going to be next for the new tag champs.
With The Usos now firmly on the heel side of the equation, you’d have thought they’d be the most likely challengers to Slater and Rhyno, but of course the champs have already beaten them on their way to capturing the belts. They also dispatched of the Hype Bros along the way, meaning that somehow The Vaudevillains, The Ascension or Breezango could be next in line for a title shot.
The only other candidates would be American Alpha, but with Chad Gable shelved and their obvious unfinished business with Jimmy and Jey to consider, it doesn't look like they'll be challenging for honours in the immediate future at least.
Long story short, we could be in store for a length title reign for Slater and Rhyno, which isn’t a sentence I thought I’d be typing just a few short months ago.
