10 Most Notorious Bret Hart Urban Legends

2. He Claims Hulk Hogan Refused To Put Him Over In WWE

Story: The ending of WrestleMania 9 was not a career highlight for Bret. After he lost the WWE Title to Yokozuna thanks to interference from Mr. Fuji, Hulk Hogan came down to the ring to say that wasn't fair. They probably could have just had the match restarted with Bret winning the title back right there, but instead it was Hogan that got a WWE Title shot and won the gold in less than a minute. At that point in his career, Hogan had just returned to WWE. He wasn't a full timer. What most people thought would happen (Bret included) was that Hogan would put him over for the WWE Title in a passing of the torch moment. Bret claimed that's what he was told. Hogan says it was never the plan. In his book, Bret detailed those events. Hogan ended up losing the WWE Title to Yokozuna at King of the Ring 1993 and then he was gone from WWE until a 2002 return. In addition to all that, Bret recently was on a tour of the UK where he spoke to fans that paid to meet him and do a Q&A where he said that it was really upsetting that Hogan wouldn't shake his hand when he saw him in 1993. He felt really disrespected by it. It's basically a case of who do you believe: Bret or Hulk? Why People Believe It: Since Bret was the next top babyface in WWE it would have made a lot of sense for Hogan to put him over. The only thing against it is that it would have been a face vs. face match, but if they did it at King of the Ring or SummerSlam it would have been a cool moment. Should We Believe It: Yes we should. For whatever reason, Hogan really didn't want to put people over in his career. Bret should have been "The Man" after Hulk left WWE and he was, but not because Hogan put him over the right way. Hogan's WWE farewell was losing to a heel that cheated to win. That was not the right way to go out. When they were in WCW together years later they worked together, but it's not like it mattered the way it would have in 1993.
