2. He Didn't Want To Put Over Steve Austin At WrestleMania 14
Story: Steve Austin was the hottest star in the business and he was being built up to become the next WWE Champion at WrestleMania 14 in March of 1998. Shawn Michaels was holding the title at the time, so the assumption was that he would drop it to Austin. Of course any time a title was involved with Michaels, there was always a question of if he would actually drop it since he had a history of being controversial. Since WWE paid millions to bring in Mike Tyson to be the special enforcer in the match, it was important that Michaels did the right thing. There were reports at the time (and repeated over the years) that locker room leader The Undertaker apparently eyed Michaels in the locker room and was taping his fists to suggest that if Michaels didn't put over Austin he would get his ass kicked. At the time, Michaels had a serious back injury that caused him to miss over two months of action and also forced him to miss the next four years. Was he really going to be unprofessional again? That was the question. Why People Believe It: Due to Shawn's history as somebody that didn't always put people over the right way, a lot of people think that without The Undertaker's threat that maybe Shawn would have refused. Should We Believe It: For this, I give you the one and only Undertaker. Go to 4:50 in this clip. http://youtu.be/O8XNMDyStFk Here's the quote: "It was questionable whether Shawn Michaels was going to do the right thing or not. Who really knows, but I'll just put it this way. If it hadn't have been done the way it was done, it would have...probably been a very long night for Shawn Michaels." He's not coming out saying he would have beat up Shawn, but he sure is insinuating it. That means we should believe that the "taped fist" story was true.
