2. Did He Distribute Steroids To Wrestlers?
Story: In 1993, Vince McMahon was indicted on charges of distributing steroids to his wresters. The charges claimed that he personally (along with his employees) were dealing drugs to his performers. This came about five years after the Ben Johnson steroid scandal in the 1988 Summer Olympics, so it was a huge news story because anybody in the public eye that had anything to do with steroids was going to receive a lot of negative backlash. Vince admitted that he had used steroids in his life even though he wasn't a wrestler. He also denied all the charges that he was a steroid dealer. The most important witness was Hulk Hogan, who was WWE's top star for the previous ten years, and it was Hogan that stated that McMahon never sold steroids. Vince was acquitted of all charges. Even though he was acquitted of the charges, his critics have been vocal about WWE's use of steroids for decades.
Why People Believe It: Look at pro wrestlers. They are huge. A lot of them are very muscular guys that didn't always look that way, so they definitely were "enhanced" in some way whether it was steroids or some other substance. Since Vince McMahon is WWE's owner, people believed that he gave his performers to help his company grow.
Should We Believe It: No. Vince is a lot of things, but it's unlikely that he was a steroid dealer. Did he encourage people to get bigger as a way to help their career? Probably. However, that's not drug dealing. It's up to wrestlers to do that on their own if they want to. A lot of them did it and continue to do it because they know it will help their careers. It's not something that WWE encourages publicly, but we all know they like their performers to be muscular.
