10 Most Notorious Vince McMahon Urban Legends

3. Former Employee Rita Chatterton Claims That Vince Raped Her

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTCYE72ZKbk Story: Rita Chatterton is a former WWE referee that performed under the name of Rita Marie for WWE in the 1980s. She was the first female referee in WWE history. Chatterton made headlines in 1992 when she went on a Geraldo Rivera TV show called Now It Can Be Told and said that McMahon forced her to perform oral sex on him in his life and after she refused, he raped her. She claims that this incident happened on July 16, 1986. A story on TalkingPointsMemo.com from 2010 (when Linda McMahon was running for office), noted that Rita didn't file a lawsuit or a police report against McMahon. Vince's lawyer Jerry McDevitt even told TPM that "I would have loved to have taken it to trial" because he was so confident that they would win. That story also noted that McMahon ended up suing Chatterton for lying about this, but they ended up dropping it because they had concentrate on the steroid trial. Basically, the whole thing just kind of went away. Why People Believe It: When somebody is rich and a powerful boss like McMahon, people sometimes think the worst of them. That's why there are people that believe the story that he could have raped Rita. It's just a case of people believing the worst in somebody. Whether fans believe it happened or not is up to each person to decide, but a lot of wrestling fans remember the name Rita Chatterton because of this rape accusation she made. Should We Believe It: No. Since she didn't pursue the matter it seems like it was just something she wanted to say on a TV show to get attention. Maybe she was scared to report it because of McMahon's power, but it seems fishy that it would take her six years to bring it up and then do nothing about it. There are probably people out there that think Vince did it because they don't like him and he's commented about being a sexually aggressive person, but that doesn't mean he's a rapist or that he would do something like that.
