10 Obscure WWE SummerSlam Facts You Didn't Know

9. Alternate Summerslam 1992 Plans

While the Bret Hart vs. Davey Boy Smith Intercontinental title is widely considered one of the best Summerslam matches of all time, the match may have not even happened, if not for the right venue.. In the months leading up to the event, chairman Vince McMahon was having a tough time deciding upon a possible location for Summerslam 1992. Bret Hart knew he would be losing the Intercontinental title to free himself up for a main event push, and wanted to maximize the heat generated for a potential Intercontinental title change. Hart spoke to McMahon and made it knon that he wanted to work with €œThe British Bulldog€ Davey Boy Smith in England, or €œThe HeartBreak Kid€ Shawn Michaels in Washington, in what would have a pay per view ladder match, over a year and a half prior to HBK and Razor Ramon's famous encounter. Hart and Michaels would participate in a "demonstration match" to give Vince McMahon an idea of how the ladder match would actually work out. The match itself can be seen on WWE home video releases, but largely went unnoticed. Eventually, McMahon settled on Wembley Arena as the location of Summerslam 1992, and the Hart/HBK ladder match didn't go down. Just two years later, Michaels and Razor Ramon would participate in a ladder match at WrestleMania, something Bret Hart admittedly remains bitter about, claiming they took his idea.
