10 Observations From Jim Ross & Jim Cornette's Attitude Era Q&A
1. Bret Hart Wanted To Garner Sympathy For Shawn Michaels
Repeatedly stating that he never wanted to leave the WWF, Bret Hart laid out what he wanted to happen for the remainder of his feud with Shawn Michaels at the end of 1997 and into 1998. At Survivor Series, the Canadian wanted to put a worked shoot hold on his foe, not relenting until he had broken Shawn's foot in storyline.
From there, Bret would stand over him and show no remorse. Right there and then, Michaels would have every right to seek revenge against his arch nemesis. For Hart, this would allow him to provoke intense heel heat, also giving Shawn great sympathy from the majority of the audience.
That harder edge was never fully explored in Hart, the 'Montreal Screwjob' prevented that and sent him packing to WCW as a broken man. Even Jim Cornette had to admit that Bret's plan sounded pretty good, although Cornette then joked that Hart should have put the hold on for real.
Further matches between Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart would never happen, so it's astounding to think what the latter was thinking for his WWF future.
