https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2hmKeVUxmI For all the abuse that Vince Russo cops regarding his time in WCW (most of which is probably deserved), some people can agree on giving him partial credit for one thing - his attempt to elevate new stars in a company which was still being headlined by borderline senior citizens. After all when Russo was one of the writers at WWE the depth of the roster was immense, and there was a substantial rise in mid card talent. So when he and Bischoff came up with the idea of a storyline which pitted the frustrated young members of the WCW roster against the egomaniacal old wrestlers desperately clinging on to their spot, the angle logically sounded like it could be red hot. Of course this being WCW in the year 2000 things didnt go quite like that. The major problem that made the angle so odd was that it seemed the heels and the faces were the wrong way round. The New Blood, comprised of mostly young WCW wrestlers who had been relegated to mid-card purgatory (think guys like Booker T, Billy Kidman, and Chris Kanyon) were the heels. The old guys who had done everything they could to hold on to their spot at the expense of the long term sustainability of the company (think Hogan, Kevin Nash, and Lex Luger) were the faces. It was like having Apollo Creed as our sympathetic protagonist, and having him overcome the plucky underdog Rocky using his wealth and power. Depending on whose account you listen to there are multiple reasons for this. Some cite the stubborn refusal of the old guard in putting the new guard over. Some cite the fact it was simply a case of the New Blood not being believable contenders. Whatever the reason(s) the sheer weirdness of what should have been a pretty straightforward angle lead to its hasty abandonment after just a couple of months and it was back to the same old madness in WCW. This was despite the promise the storyline held as a really interesting angle, and a chance for the lower and mid card talent to get over for a change.
