10 Once Awesome WWE Storylines Which Overstayed Their Welcome

2. Tommaso Ciampa Vs Johnny Gargano

While this remains one of, if not WWE's greatest rivalry of the modern era, most can agree that it went just a touch too long.

The Gargano and Tommaso drama was an intricately told story with many slow-burning, subtle hints at the pair's breakup ever since the team really hit its stride.

So when Ciampa did finally turn on that fateful Chicago stage, everybody knew that it was off to the races. These two were destined to fight forever. But was it necessary to do it at three straight Takeovers? Probably not.

The matches were all as good as the last, but WWE needed to take a leaf out of NJPW's book here. Kenny Omega and Kazichuka Okada had recently completed their own immaculate trifecta of wrestling matches that will go down in history as probably the best ever. One of the contributing factors to its magic being that the pair were kept apart until it was necessary to be brought back together. The three matches were stretched over a space of almost two years. Now that is the perfect slow burn feud. WWE burnt their trilogy within six months.

Then less than two years later the pair met in a cinematic match that was far from the quality of its predecessors at Takeover: Tampa. Fans were torn about the whole thing. But in the end, the general consensus was too much too soon.

A rivalry like this needs to be saved for only the most appropriate of situations.
