10 Opening Wrestling PPV Matches Better Than The Main Event
9. The Usos Vs. The Wyatt Family (Battleground 2014)
Main Event: John Cena vs. Kane vs. Randy Orton vs. Roman Reigns for World Heavyweight Championship
If you thought "classic" tag team wrestling was dead in the modern era, here came a friendly reminder from the Usos and the Wyatts that you were dead wrong, hombre.
The match was about as crisp and mistake-free as it could be while still retaining an exciting crackle of energy throughout. The dynamic of the high-flyers versus the big men worked impeccably, following the template laid out by The Rockers and The Natural Disasters a decade or so earlier.
The two-out-of-three falls gimmick seemed tacked on, but the pace was excellent, the near falls were genuinely exciting, and the double splash from the Usos to seal the victory was an awesome way to finish things off.
The main event was... fine. It had the potential to end on a much higher note, but that pretty much went out the window with the obvious Cena victory.
The gimmick part of the main event was completely useless though, as the melee seemed too structured for the most part. There weren't many unique exchanges or interesting collisions to speak of, and even though everyone involved performed admirably, there simply wasn't enough intrigue to carry the match.
