10 Opening Wrestling PPV Matches Better Than The Main Event
8. The Brain Busters Vs. The Hart Foundation - SummerSlam 1989
Main Event: Hulk Hogan and Brutus Beefcake vs. Randy Savage and Zeus
You might be wondering howba match featuring Tully Blanchard and Jim Neidhart could possibly be better than one that had the Hulkster and the Macho Man in their prime. And to that, I have but one word: Zeus.
For those who don't recall, Zeus was a gimmick first portrayed by actor 'Tiny' Lister in the movie No Holds Barred, also starring Hulk Hogan as pro wrestler Rip Thomas. In the ensuing storyline, the movie character Zeus feuded with WWE character Hogan (not movie character Rip) because Zeus was upset about losing to Rip in the movie. It didn't make any more sense at SummerSlam than it does right now.
And even though Hogan takes a decent beating and Savage is on top of his game, the focal point of this match is Sensational Sherri's "loaded purse", which is frequently used as a weapon. Seriously.
But the Busters and the Harts put on a damn clinic to open the event, chockfull of mind games, sweet tag maneuvers, and some excellently-executed technical wrestling. All of which were rarities at this SummerSlam.
