Maybe The Iron Sheik passed the torch to Hulk Hogan by doing the job for him in 1983. Maybe. The truth is this however: Sheik was a paper champion who only beat Bob Backlund so Hulk had a despicable heel to supplant. Almost four years later, it was time for Hogan to get that torch properly from the one man he respected above all.

André The Giant.

At WrestleMania III, WWE weaved a tale of fractured friendship. The 'unbeatable' giant (who didn't do many clean jobs at all during his career) would go up against Vince McMahon's main money-maker in a mega-match responsible for a mammoth gate at the old Pontiac Silverdome.

When Hulk dropped the leg on André, pinned him and celebrated with his throngs of fans, it was a true milestone moment. The Giant was willing to put his aura on the line to give Hulk even more star power and help keep the Hulkamania machine ticking.
