10 Pivotal Mick Foley Moments From The Monday Night Wars
1. Winning The Belt
The most pivotal moment of all was never supposed to happen in the first place. Few would have backed the man Vince saw as "Mason the Mutilator" to be WWE World Champion one day. By January 4th 1999, WCW had been beating WWE in the ratings for two years. They had Goldberg, they had the NWO plus their show was live meaning they insisted on the dirty trick of giving away WWE results as their show was pre-taped and Eric Bischoff already knew the outcomes.
Big mistake. When Tony Schiavone broke the news that Mick Foley would be crowned champion that night it had the opposite effect than intended. Thousands of people switched to see a fantastic main event that included many of the things that made WWE so great. Austin, Rock, McMahon and DX were all there in a thrilling, fast past match with a humongous twist. And the star of that momentous moment? Mick Foley.
In WCW, Ric Flair had predicted that Mick Foley would be in a wheelchair by the time he was thirty and no one would care. It didn't exactly pan out that way. Instead, Foley became a huge part of turning the ratings in WWE's favour and then finishing off WCW for good.
