No other superstar had the depth of switching between separate, individual characters in such a short time as Mick Foley. Mankind, Dude Love and Cactus Jack have all headlined WWE events of their own accord but it was one night on Raw that we truly saw the WWE's brave, innovative style presented in a nutshell. Foley had been two of his famous 'faces' for Vince McMahon so far in his WWE run. It was time to take a gamble on the third.

On the 22nd September 1997 edition of Raw, Triple H was due to fight Dude Love in a Falls Count Anywhere match. Triple H was left standing in the ring as the Dude explained via Titantron that this match really wasn't his 'bag' and deferred to Mankind, who, in some classic 90s visual trickery sat down right beside him. But the master of the Mandible Claw deferred again, introducing Mick Foley's original creation to the WWE for the first time.

Cactus Jack was back, and judging by the immediate chants of "ECW! ECW! ECW!", the fans' love of the 'Three Faces of Foley' had just begun. It was ground-breaking wrestling television and Mick Foley was front and centre. The fans were getting behind him at this point and top WWE brass was beginning to wonder if he could go all the way.
