WWE had been trying to get a one-on-one pay-per-view singles match between former Shield members Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns for almost 2 years.

Following the split of the trio in June 2014, Rollins was immediately programmed against Dean Ambrose as WWE opted to save the Roman/Rollins program for later down the road. When WWE decided to present the first PPV meeting between those two at Night Of Champions 2014, the match had to be cancelled the day before due to Roman Reigns' emergency surgery.

When WWE went back to the match over a year later, this time at Survivor Series 2015, it was Rollins' health that would prevent that match from happening after he tore his ACL in a match against Kane just a few weeks prior.

Both men's respective injuries caused them to be out of action for months and so the match always had to be postponed. The third time was the charm for these two, however, as WWE finally got the match in the ring at Money In The Bank 2016.

While WWE was able to deliver on the long awaited match this past Summer, a rematch at this year's Survivor Series, one year removed from their originally scheduled WWE Championship match, would be fitting given the duo's history at the November show.
