10 Radical Ideas That Could Save WWE's Tag Division

3. Differentiate Trios Matches From The Tag Division

Someone in the office clearly has a soft spot for the concept of the trios match. Impromptu six-man tags have been a staple of RAW and Smackdown main events for years, and Legacy, The Wyatt Family, The Shield, The New Day etc are all quality examples of the kind of heel trio that the Freebirds used to be. In order to keep these matches distinct from the tag division, they need to happen less often. There€™s a law of diminishing returns at play here €“ if the advertised main event is a six-man tag between a collection of genuine stars, then the more pedestrian four-man stuff between regular tag team specialists lower down the card isn€™t going to blow anyone€™s minds. Alternatively, you could book the trios matches as something of an additional extra to the tag team division. The NWA used to run six-man competition as an adjunct to the main event: a singles star would join forces with a feted tag team to form a three man unit that would team everywhere for two or three months, perhaps longer, until creative plans were freed up to give the two separate units their own storylines again. The singles star would help get the tag team over, and the tag team would give the singles star something interesting to do while he waited for his new programme to begin.
