10 Radical Ideas That Could Save WWE's Tag Division

4. Protect The Champions

Here€™s another one to mark on the whiteboard: the tag team champions should not be losing non-title matches to build to a title match with the same people. If The New Day lose twice a week to the Prime Time Players leading up to a title match (on the pre-show) on the upcoming pay-per-view, who€™s going to want to watch it? We already know that the PTP have their number, and we€™ve seen them ring it on more than one occasion. Allocating a match we€™ve seen twice or more on free TV an extra five minutes, placing it in front of a slightly bigger crowd and making it more difficult (and possibly expensive) to find and watch doesn€™t suddenly make it must-see wrestling. It€™s a booking policy that€™s pretty pervasive across all of WWE€™s programming, but when it comes to the tag championships it€™s far worse, because (as discussed) the in-ring competition is frequently the only real storyline to their feuds. If they€™re playing out the same story twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays, no one€™s going to pay to see it on Sunday night. Protect your champions. It€™s basic booking 101: that way, there€™s drama when the title€™s actually on the line, and they get to show us something we haven€™t seen yet.
