10 Reasons CM Punk Was The Biggest WWE Story Of 2014

2. He Was Fired On His Wedding Day

CM Punk's two-part podcast with Colt Cabana had the entire wrestling world buzzing for what he had to say on his WWE tenure and why he ultimately split from the company. Some of what he said was already common knowledge since it was assumed he wasn't content with the creative direction the company was taking when he left. Most of it was new material. The most shocking development that came out of the tell-all interview was Punk revealing he, in fact, did not quit but rather was fired, on his wedding day, no less. Granted, him walking out of the company in January can be seen as a way of quitting. Based off what he said in the podcast, a return to the ring wasn't completely out of the question. While he was supposedly suspended for 60 days and eligible to return following WrestleMania 30, Punk claims WWE never contacted him about coming back. He later received his severance papers on the day he was getting ready to marry AJ Lee. Punk is a strong believer that it was no coincidence regardless of what anyone says. Vince McMahon apologized publicly to Punk and claimed it wasn't intentional on "Stone Cold" Steve Austin's live podcast on WWE Network. It appears that hasn't changed Punk's mind at all. Who knows? There's a fairly good chance the self-proclaimed "best in the world" would have been back in WWE by now had their working relationship not ended in the fashion it did. This bit of news was the biggest takeaway from his appearance on Cabana's "Art of Wrestling" podcast, shaking the wrestling world to its very core. It even changed some people's perception of why he left and opted not to return.
