10 Reasons CM Punk Was The Biggest WWE Story Of 2014

7. He Walked Out When WWE Needed Him Most

CM Punk may not have done much of note when he returned from his hiatus in mid-2013, but his various run-ins with Paul Heyman, The Wyatt Family and The Shield were all leading to a marquee match against Triple H at WrestleMania 30. The two had one match against each other at 2011's Night of Champions event that saw Triple H emerge victorious. This would have been Punk's way of evening the score. Due to his injuries piling up and being burnt out beyond belief, he walked out of the company the night after the Royal Rumble pay-per-view. Regardless of whether Punk was in the right or wrong when he made his exit, he left at a time when WWE needed him most. He was on the verge of becoming a main event star again. Upon finding out that he wasn't going to be able to fulfill his longtime goal of competing in the main event of WrestleMania, he took his bags and went home. That's not to insinuate that what he did was wrong, but he didn't put the company in the best position on the road to their biggest show of the year. That's not to mention how the depth of the roster for a good portion of this year has been weaker than it's ever been. There's no questioning Punk would have been WWE World Heavyweight champion when Daniel Bryan got injured instead of John Cena. He left a major void atop the WWE totem pole that still has yet to be filled.
