Vince McMahon loves comedy in his wrestling. He thinks it’s a big part of the entertainment package. Most of it, though, has been painfully bad. Kurt Angle is one of the few exceptions. He’s a natural actor who has incredible comedic timing. When he tried to be funny, you didn’t want to change the channel like when Hornswoggle or Santino tried. You could imagine that Angle would have fit in just fine on a regular TV sitcom.

Look back to his work with Edge and Christian in team “ECK” for some classic wrestling comedy. Years later he was delightful at singing Shawn Michaels’ theme song, and he also had a memorable bit early in his career when he preached the virtues of abstinence on a weekly basis in the overly-sexualized Attitude Era.

However, he was so good at playing the fool that it may have been a detriment to his career. Kurt is one of the greatest talents to ever emerge in wrestling, and he could play an intense killer just as well as he could play a lovable goofball. Because of that, Vince would often use him for comedy, which undercut his character at times. Watching him wear a dorky cowboy hat while singing was amusing, but it made it a bit harder to buy into him as the ultimate face later on in his career.

Still, very few wrestlers have ever been so good at playing so many different roles than Angle. It's true. It's damn true.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
