Social media has really helped to make the game more fun, as well as helped to spread the word about it. People would discuss it on Twitter and Facebook, and others, who haven't played it yet, would see the discussion and have their interests piqued. When a group of friends gets together to talk about the game on social media, the conversation inevitably turns to who is performing the best. You'll see a lot of "My best card is such and such", "my record is so and so", "I unlocked a Legendary so and so this morning", etc, and if you're part of that conversation, you don't want to end up being the person who has the worst record, or who has yet to unlock any of the truly special cards. That provides everyone with the extra motivation to go out and play some more, so they can come back to the conversation in the future and talk about what has happened since the last get-together.
