4. The Rock Wasn't Available

A year and a half ago, Triple H was shooting angles with The Rock on Smackdown. They then followed up with the great segment at WrestleMania 31, which also featured Stephanie McMahon and Ronda Rousey. The loose plan was for either Rocky versus Hunter at WrestleMania 32, or an inter-gender tag match in which Steph and Rousey would join them. Again, it played into Triple H's legacy obsession, as main eventing the biggest Mania ever alongside Rock and Rousey would have been tremendous business. But that fell through, and once Seth Rollins went out injured, Triple H had exactly zero potential matches at WrestleMania. How could he main event the biggest show of all time if he didn't have an angle? And that's where the Rumble comes into it. It made Hunter a headliner, giving him the reason to main event WrestleMania. Now he doesn't need The Rock, as the Rumble has made him WWE Champion and an automatic main event.
