Triple H winning the Royal Rumble is as much about Seth Rollins as it is Roman Reigns. Rollins is the long term plan, with the idea that the student comes back as a babyface to take on his old master. In getting ready for that, Hunter won the Rumble and re-entered the WWE Title picture. Maybe the actual plan, is for him to keep the belt all the way until Rollins is back. Maybe he figured all along that Reigns would be booed against him, thus enabling him to have a case to hold on to the title until Rollins returns. He'll then get to work the match he really wants, in addition to having a longer run as The Man.
