10 Reasons Why DDP Was The Original People’s Champ Of Wrestling

7. The Music

Few songs capture the essence of the 1990s quite like “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by legendary Seattle grunge rockers, Nirvana. Similarly, one of the biggest WCW stars of the 90s was without doubt Diamond Dallas Page. Put the two together and you have WCW’s man of the decade.

Unfortunately for WCW, it seemed that Hulk Hogan had already got dibs on the Ted Turner music fund by opting to use Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child” as his own entrance theme. Rather than WCW pay out for the music royalties associated with another pre-existing track, it was decided that they would simply create their own.

Essentially an instrumental version of the Nirvana classic with some slight tweaks and minor alterations, DDP’s entrance theme was clearly and unashamedly a rip-off of the original. Nirvana drummer, Dave Grohl, himself even went on record as saying that WCW owed the band money in royalties; however, nothing ever came of the situation.

Regardless of plagiarism, the music fit the character perfectly and was just what DDP needed to further his growing star power.
