10 Reasons Why It Took John Cena 16 Years To Get Good At Wrestling

7. John Cena Was Better At Keeping Up As "The Face Of The Company" Than Setting The Pace

There's people that say that CM Punk was John Cena's best opponent. However, I'll give that honor to Edge. We can argue that Punk used Cena as a stepping stone to showing that "indyriffic guys" can work WWE style and get over in front of the WWE Universe. However, Edge was the wrestler who was willing to put the theory to the test that John Cena wasn't the *only* wrestler outside of Triple H who could be the focal point of WWE. At a time where John Cena was emerging as the go-to guy, Edge came along in 2006 and worked at a level at or above whatever Cena was doing and for a bit, was the champion and was able to run with the ball as the lead performer in WWE -- with Cena following behind. Eventually Cena elevated his game as a main eventer to where Edge was at as a great heel performer and their in-ring synergy was phenomenal. However, not every main event heel Cena had was on Edge's level and while his matches with those who weren't Edge were always solid, they certainly weren't on the level of Rock, Austin, Brock, Angle, Benoit, Guerrero or Triple H's title matches in the prior era. However, his matches may be on that level now.
