10 Reasons Why Jake Roberts Is Wrestling’s Original Antihero
7. Not Greedy For Gold
As one of the most legendary performers in the history of the industry, it’s hard to believe that Jake Roberts never held a championship in the WWF. However, his lack of championship accolades only adds to his legend.
Jake never needed a championship to command the respect of the people. As a businessman, Jake was smart enough to know that Hulk Hogan was the horse that pulled the WWF cart in the 1980s. The WWF had always operated with a babyface champion on top and Jake understood his place on the card; he didn't need to be WWF Champion.
What's more, not only was he not greedy for gold, he wasn't even greedy for victory and had no problem helping other stars get over. He was frequently used as a "heater" for Hulk Hogan in the '80s and Vince regularly utilised Jake as a stepping stone for stars to get ready for the main event.
Even in the twilight of his career, Jake continued to make stars, most memorably laying the foundation for Steve Austin's ascent at the King of the Ring 1996. Even in his brief, one-night return in 2005, Jake took an RKO from Randy Orton in an attempt to help further his character as 'The Legend Killer' at the time.
