10 Reasons WWE Doesn't Attract New Fans
9. Awful Commentary
For new fans of wrestling, the commentary is perhaps the most important thing. It’s through Michael Cole or Tom Phillips that they are introduced to this confusing world. They’re the ones who tell them the wrestlers' names and flesh out their stories. They explain what is happening in the match and link together all the tropes that might not be easy to grasp on first viewing.
Except, they don’t actually do that. Instead, WWE’s commentary tends to spend its time pimping out the latest product that Vince McMahon has unleashed into the world or talking about things that have nothing to do with what is going on in the ring. There’s no point telling us John Cena’s story when it’s Enzo and Neville that we’re watching.
Bad commentary is a minor annoyance to established wrestling fans. We are able to phase it out because we know what is happening and we are plugged into that world. New fans aren’t. They need commentators to guide them. Sadly, that's not a service WWE provides.
