4. Ultimately, His Babyface Run Was A Failure
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwVEYS4mskM In the run up to Wrestlemania 29, Alberto Del Rio turned babyface for the only time in his WWE career to face off against Jack Swagger and, more specifically, his manager Zeb Coulter. Named after the American conservative political commentator Ann Coulter, Zeb was a right-wing, anti-immigration character who bemoaned the number of foreigners in the WWE, claiming they all must have sneaked over the border and stolen their jobs from Americans. It was a very brave angle from the WWE who gained mainstream press as a result. Watch the full video above to see Coulter and Swagger actually break character, just to hammer home the idea that the whole thing was a story told for entertainment, and to assure everyone that, in the end, these characters would get their comeuppance at the hands of "Mexico's greatest import", Alberto Del Rio. In the end, though, the angle ended up falling rather flat. Del Rio just couldn't seem to cut it as a face. Even in an angle tailer-made for a face Del Rio, his announcer Ricardo Rodriquez ended up being responsible for getting the cheers. Being a face in wrestling is hard. Getting people to genuinely root for you is one of the hardest things to achieve. Though if you can't get cheers as the protagonist in a feud against a racist, maybe you never will.
