That is a situation the WWE do not want rearing its ugly head under any circumstances. If Punk and the company "officially" part ways, it slams the door on a dream return rather emphatically. Playing it safe is perhaps the smartest option in this instance, and keeping the dream alive for CM Punk fans could well be the route to head down by renewing the deal, despite his absence. There is no guarantee what will happen in the coming weeks and months - Punk could well have a change of heart and decide he wants to give it another go with the WWE. And if that turns out to be the case, the WWE have to ensure the thousands of Punk fans are well satisfied, and he returns to the company swiftly. Even if nothing happens straight away, it is important the fans remain happy - because they are the ones that keep the business ticking over.
