The general tone of the era was overwhelmingly awful and ugly - but the sheer extent to which that is true is lost to time. It is only when delving into a random 1998 episode of Raw do you realise just how rancid it was.
Almost every second yields a problematic moment. The worst moments are not remotely limited to Trish Stratus being ordered to strip and bark like a dog, Terri Runnels faking a miscarriage, D-Generation X performing in blackface, the endless Bra and Panties matches...
Triple H was rightly trounced for performing in blackface, so much so that you forget that time he dressed up as 'Dr. Hung Lo', a grotesque Asian caricature, during his feud with Mick Foley. The Trish segment was met with such fierce backlash that it's easy to forget about the time that D-Generation X intimated that they had sexually assaulted Stephanie McMahon before it was revealed that they'd simply assaulted somebody who vaguely looked like her!
There was also that time the Rock threatened to sexually assault Chyna before changing his mind on the basis that he didn't find her sufficiently attractive.
Even within the show, beyond the angles, the casual awfulness drooled out of every pore. The stench is both fresh and pungent; a dank, lingering odour cloaks all of it.
You can barely go a minute without somebody saying a homophobic slur and Jerry Lawler giggling like a teenage boy.
